Well, at least the ones I take time to take a picture of, anyway, lol.

Breaking in our new chalkboard: Welcome Autumn!

I apologize for the poor photo quality - our dining room does not get good sun in the morning and the flash made a nasty glare... Among other things, Juliet studied ancient Egypt and made a Senet game, Maggie finished a model landscape of our house/yard and also wrote a little paper about Stuart Little, and Grace listened to fairy tales, worked on her handwriting of letters, and learned math concepts with the gnumber gnomes.

I'm tired this week and feeling down - since we had to take yesterday off for a dentist appointment and subsequent picnic with friends, I'm taking the rest of the week off to get caught up with house stuff. Hey, it's summer. Since we are technically three weeks "ahead" - I'm going to run with that and not push myself or the kids. I have seen them blossom creatively in doing their own educational things in the past few days.

Juliet sat down with Grace and Leah and labeled our Sonlight markable map with all the states.

Juliet and Maggie started a family olympics with categories like, "who can stand on one foot the longest," "who can whistle the longest," "who can run the longest without passing out." LOL

They all helped me garden and we talked about the soil, rocks, insects, worms, and flowers. We dug up bulbs that were in the garden (accidentally at first) and they decided to keep them and plant them somewhere else as their own project.

Maggie continues to work on her short stories and character development, writing all sorts of charts, etc.

Grace is reading through her children's bible on her own.

I find it interesting that they were really floundering until I forced some school work on them. But now they are not ONLY doing that work, they are taking some free time to be creative and fun. When we were just "off", they seemed lazy, bored, and were angry and picking on each other. I like this better. Hopefully I can find a good middle ground.

July 9 2009

Had a library visit today. My favorite librarian chided me for only getting 39 books out. I swear our rolling cart was full! LOL I got out a few books for me that were fat, so that took up a lot of cart room. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

A little less got done than usual, although we all seemed to be busy.

Rose - started writing a little Q & A from the perspective of a "cave woman." She did a lesson in TT6 and was very excited that it was on something new (a little geometry) and not the same ol' fractions/decimals/percents that have been plaguing her for months. We got a neat book out of the library called Drawing In Color by Kathryn Temple and she promptly sat down and sketched a great apple. She amazes me!

Skye-library visit, some work on her short stories (these are just stories that she is always writing, usually very American Girl-esque), we did more more tonal drawing instruction (which I believe is just using one color, but darker or lighter, to show the shape of something) and she drew an apple from many different perspectives. This was also science - we examined and cut it and discussed the geometry of it, etc. Skye did 1 or 2 lessons in TT4.

Jane - library visit, reading, TT4, and the rest of the day was playing and trying to clean her room!

The little ones watched a new Signing Time we got from the library, and the older ones watched a Mr. Wizard DVD and a Kit (American Girl) movie. Does someone fall down on every walk at your house? We did see a cool nest and the top of a broken robin's egg, so I consider PE and science covered for the day. ;-) Oh and first aid! LOL

Circle Time: an opening and closing verse from Oak Meadow's First Grade Week 1, plus we are learning the hymns For All Things Now Living and For the Beauty of the Earth so we sang those. They both fit very well with our OM curriculum. Everyone joined today's CT.

LA and art: I read the fairy tale for the letter A from OM syllabus and we illustrated the story and the letter A, capital and lower case. (Both Jane and Rose did this - Rose was too intrigued by our new art supplies to leave!) Our new Stone crayons, Stockmar block crayons, and Ferby colored pencils were big hits. Even Jeffrey colored his high chair tray. :-P

Rose began her OM6 year today by defining her vocabulary words and beginning some maps of Africa, Asia, and Europe. After some computer trouble, she got started back on Teaching Textbooks 6. Wow - apparently a few weeks off of math is baaaad news for a dyslexic!

Skye spent the morning getting ahead in Teaching Textbooks 4! Then she did some sketches of our backyard in prep for making a model. She also wrote in her journal, and started reading Stuart Little, which is too easy for her but is in OM and I'm not familiar enough with the curriculum to start making substitutions.

Jane did a bit in TT4 also.

They're here!

No, not the bedbugs. While we all seem to love history, and the readers and read alouds, I think the intense nature of the subjects covered over the last few months especially was too much for us. Civil War, the World Wars, the Holocaust...

I know they are important things to learn about, and we are all glad we did, but I think we lost our focus, and it became depressing in a way. Too heavy. We lost our focus on the Creator of the World, the King of History. Our Hope, our Joy. Heavy is OK if you don't lose touch with God.

We actually did finish 98% of the history assigned through Sonlight. What we did't finish were the readers and read alouds. I've asked some questions over on their forums, and am trying to piece together a gentle plan to read some of the books that others consider "not-to-miss."

I'll suggest Gone Away Lake as a summer reader. In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson will be added when we study Asian Cultures next year. The older girls will listen to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry after I get a chance to get it from the library and take a listen myself (this could take awhile! When do I get kid free *hours*??) Possibly Thimble Summer as another "summer reader" - although I think our library has it on tape. We'll read The Winged Watchman next. Everyone said it was fantastic. But with this schedule I don't need to rush through it. We'll do it when we do it!

Sonlighters told me that In Search of the Source and Bruchko were good lead ins to Core 5. So I'll try to pre-read before the end of the summer and start there.

When all is said and done I think we are really only skipping one or two, but I feel suddenly FREE with that plan. Silly, I know, I needn't be a slave to any IG, but the books are always SO GOOD that I hate to miss any. But we need to move our focus right now.

We are very much looking forward to combining Solight's Core 5 read alouds and readers with Serendipity's World Tour starting...well, starting whenever I can't stand waiting anymore! :)

Rosetta Stone Giveaway

***

Rosetta Stone is the fastest way to learn a language and has been the #1 foreign language curriculum among homeschoolers for a while — and you can WIN the *all new* version 3 Rosetta Stone Homeschool LATIN program… FOR FREE! This is the first year you can get Latin in the brand new Version III update.

This is a $259 program (and believe me it’s worth every penny!)
This is a computer based curriculum and Rosetta Stone will also include a headset with microphone, and a supplementary “Audio Companion” CD so you can practice lessons in the car, on the go, or where-ever! Students participate in life-like conversations and actually produce language to advance through the program. Rosetta Stone incorporates listening, reading, grammar, vocabulary and writing along with speaking and pronunciation lessons. For parents, the new Parent Administrative Tools are integrated into the program to allow parents to easily enroll up to ten students in any of 12 predetermined lesson plans, monitor student progress, grade completed work (the program grades the work automatically as the students progress- I love that!), and you can view and print reports for transcripts. Homeschooling a lot of kids at your house? This program is designed to enroll and track up to ten students (five users on two computers) and will work for nearly all ages — from beginning readers up to college students.

To win this most excellent Latin program copy these paragraphs and post them in (or as) your next blog post, and/OR link to the contest from your facebook page and/OR email the information to your homeschool support group – Then go to the original page http://Jeneralities.com and leave a comment saying that you’ve posted about, or have linked to, the contest. Please make sure the link works to get back to the original contest page when you post. He mostly hid away, but it was still "different." :)

DD did at least 30 minutes on Brainware Safari (both days). She is slowly and surely moving up levels, even on the ones that require her to click to a metronome (still difficult but improving).

Monday we did spelling (AAS). Review of sounds of g, c, a, e, i, o, u, ng, nk, ch, th, sh

She watched Lesson 9 from The Phonics Page and read the accompanying nonsense sentences from levels 7, 8, and 9.

Made her follow along as I read our read-aloud, Caddie Woodlawn.

Tuesday she read aloud to me from The Great Wave. She can do so well with just a little help. I'm seeing more clearly now that her dyslexia is much a function of her not applying what she *does* know, and rushing. Part ADHD, part personality... I'm not saying she doesn't have dyslexia, but I think she can present worse than than her true abilities. Or maybe it's just all the hard work we've done in the past month. ;-)

We've also started a Reader's Journal where she writes a short letter to me about what she is reading, and I write one back (ad infinitum). She is loving it, and I'm hoping that putting reading/writing in a fun and natural context will help her retention and progress with spelling/writing skills.

Mon- Thurs 2/26 Rose

Started Brainware Safari today. Still forgetting double l/s/f on occasion. Starting to understand how helpful it is to find the baseword/suffix/prefix to follow spelling rules. Had trouble with the short /u/ sound - kept wanting to spell it "a" since that's how you pronounce "a book," "a pencil" etc. So truck was track, trunk was trank. This is typical (vowel trouble) but a new one for us! I asked for advice on Chatterbee, we'll see if any is forthcoming!

Made /u/ model in clay and said short sound while tracing - spelled out truck and a few other short /u/ words in clay letters.

DYCFS- tape walking (p 65) this was more a struggle (to keep balance) than I expected. Discussed keeping her orientation point (from Davis book). Sad, but it led to a great, if tearful, discussion. Later in the day I heard DD say to her sister, "I love Mommy because when I have a problem, I go to her and she tells me what I should do to help it." Awwww...

-created clay representation of "before". She had trouble with this, both defining "before" and creating a good model for it. Much discussion later, she settled on showing one clock having 12PM on it and another with 1 PM on it, and a clay arrow pointing to the 12PM one. She kept wanting to use it more like "until" which is OK but not what this was supposed to be getting at (like, "The girl couldn't eat before making her lunch." i.e. she couldn't eat until she had made lunch - I know I was getting picky, but because she also had trouble with "cause" I wanted to make sure she really understood the term "before")

-used All About Spelling (AAS) cards from level 1 to do phoneme segmenting. Did very well overall - trouble with ing, ong, ung, (said they were 1 phoneme) and nk (divided it into two phonemes) words. Did about first 100 word cards.

-wrote on our clear-vinyl-covered dining room table with wet-erase markers (she loved this). Practiced some phonemes that have more than one sound, while writing that letter(s) - a, nk, c, g, ch, th, sh.

-the rest of the day was just her normal work, plus a walk with her 5yo sister

ETA: more reading of idiom dictionary after dinner. I find I'm talking in idioms lately! LOL

2/16/09

It has been impossible to keep all the different details of therapy and academics in my overtaxed brain! Here's what I can remember doing from last week:

-Davis program (The Gift of Dyslexia and The Gift of Learning): discussed mind's eye and "disorientation" and found her orientation point; made clay doll of herself; made clay representations of the concepts: consequence, cause, effect. "Cause" was hard for her (as was "before" that we did today...telling...); made grid of 100 balls of clay and discussed multiplication and division; made clay alphabet and spoke forwards and backwards while looking and from memory; made clay numeral/words and correct # of dots (showed her "touchpoints" during this). Spelling the numbers was a struggle - we spelled and sounded out while tracing the letters.

-Flashcards for multiplication. Her request. It seems to be helping, even though it didn't in the past. Maybe because it was her choice? Maybe she's just matured?

-Ordered Brainware Jungle from Homeschool Buyer's Co-op. This is supposed to help memory, attention, planning, etc which I believe underlie most of her problems. It's not that she hasn't been taught everything several times over, it's that it doesn't stick!

-Physical activities from Developing Your Child For Success. The activites themselves were easy enough until it had to be done to a steady beat, although she could act out a rhythm. I was surprised at how difficult they were for a certain other family member but she is not the subject of this blog, LOL. Hopping on one foot, on alternating feet, hopping out a rhythm. Crawling using same side, crawling with alternating sides (i.e. left hand with right leg)

-Evenings after dinner with Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms. Usually done "Marshmallow Challenge" style (kids get marshmallows tossed to them for correct answers). They all love this.

Ugh, I'm blank. I'll edit this post if I remember anything else.

Current curriculum for Rose

All About Spelling (they also have forums) - we are using this as intense phonics review, phonemic awareness, and general spelling.

Adding in How To Teach Spelling (the teacher's manual - once I get it!) for my own education.
